Spam, Spam, Spam, Baked Beans and Spam

One of the banes of running a blog and building an audience is the attack of the spammers. You’d be amazed, I know I was, at how many spam messages a blog receives. Today I had 115 spam messages in the last 24 hours! Thankfully, I have an application on my blog administration to catch spammers who enter something using the Comments link in the identifying information after each post. But a few have been clever enough to slip past me.

I don’t really understand the purpose of all these spam comments. Do people really look at the comments? Are they then clicking on people’s information taking them to ad websites? It seems unlikely to me, but then I’m not usually influenced by advertising in the first place.

I would love to hear from our REAL readers what they think. I want to encourage you to participate in this blog. But I can’t take all that time to review all those comments for any that might be legitimate.

So, from now on, I will accept my blog’s determination of what is or is not spam. To get around the spam filter, you must have either commented before or make sure your comment is pertinent to the post you’re commenting on, have a legitimate email address and no referral to a commercial website.

I’m really sorry to have to play it this way. I suspect most other blogs get this sort of thing and don’t mention it. I know I had no intension of talking about it, just allowing the spam to be deleted quietly. But when I have six screens of comments to review, clearly the problem is getting out of hand.

I will be making some more improvements to this blog in the near future. In that, I will make sure you can email legitimate comments as well as using the comments link after each post. If you have any other ideas that a non-programmer can do, please pass them along. If I have deleted your comment as spam and it really wasn’t, I apologize and ask you to resubmit it as an emailed comment. The email address is You can also use that for any other comments or questions or post submissions you may have.

Thank you for your understanding, your support and your participation. I want to see this blog continue to grow. I can only do that with your help.
