Food Safety News Update: Mid-August

I haven’t posted a lot about the food recalls and safety news lately because there’s just so much of it. But there’s been another rash of stories, so we’ll cover them briefly.

Sequim Bay in Washington has been closed to shellfish harvesting because of Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning. Three people in the Seattle area have been sickened by the biotoxin that causes this illness. Thousands of people around the world have been made sick from DSP in the last 50 years. Until recently, the rich fishing waters of the Northwest have been spared this infection. Canadian authorities are also halting sales of shellfish because of the outbreak.

Diced cooked bacon from Canada has been recalled after authorities found Listeria in a shipment. Ailments Prince is recalling 380,000 pounds of the bacon sold under several different brands.

More than 60,000 pounds of ground beef have been recalled because of possible e. coli contamination. The products are from the National Beef Packing Company in Dodge City, Kansas. No illnesses have been reported so far.

The Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet Cheese Company of Virginia has recalled it’s cheese spread because of possible salmonella contamination.

Layered avocado dips from Fresh Food Concepts of Buena Park, California have been recalled for possible Listeria contamination. The dips are sold under the following names: Fresh Food Concepts 5-Layer Dip, Delicioso 5-Layer Dip, Rojo’s Ultimate 7-Layer Dip, Rojo’s Supreme 6-Layer Dip, Rojo’s 6-Layer Dip and Signature Café 6-Layer Dip.
