Is it Jaime Oliver’s Food Revolution? Is it the military? Is it just the First Lady? Well, maybe it’s a combination of all three.
This article from Food Safety News says many school districts are upgrading their lunch programs thanks to a new law passed by Congress. Oliver’s TV program made many Americans more aware of the problem, shining the spotlight on school boards. But the show also put a lot of blame on the federal government’s rules about school lunches. This law was passed as part of Michelle Obama’s children’s fitness efforts.
What’s the military connection? It seems the near-starvation of Depression era children led to many being rejected for military service in World War Two. The school lunch program was designed to make sure poor kids got enough food. Now the problem is reversed and many teens are being rejected by the military due to obesity.
