Raise A Glass To The Season

Many bottles of wine will be floating around during the holidays. You’ll probably lay in a few bottles for yourself. Lots of people will be bringing them by as gifts, especially for parties and get-togethers. And then comes “amateur night,” New Year’s Eve, when wine and stronger spirits will be flowing liberally.

Even if you’re not a drinker, a little wine or a cocktail won’t hurt you unless you have a problem with alcohol. It’s a good idea to at least try some and see what you like and what you don’t. After all, a little wine can be quite healthy.

Many people get scared around wine. They say they don’t know anything about wine, sometimes making choices on the basis of names or colorful labels. We who have a bit more experience with wine might cringe at that. But it’s a good way to explore and learn about wines you might not otherwise taste.

People sometimes ask us what’s a good wine. We always answer: The wine you like. Wine is a fascinating and marvelous thing. It is simple and complex at the same time. It is a living thing that breathes and changes.

If you find a good wine shop that has tastings, make a point to go as often as you can. People who know about wine will be there to provide information and answers to your questions. It’s worth getting to know this beverage that’s ancient and new, full bodied and light, fruity and flavorful.
